Hi there,
It is my pleasure to introduce you to Judy Stavisky. Judy is an amazing woman and an accomplished writer. She first introduced herself to me by saying she knew she wasn’t the only person in the world who read cookbooks for bedtime stories. I laughed out loud because that is the truth about me. Judy has written a fascinating book about the daily lives of Amish women. I purchased it on Amazon and have been reading it. It is a very well-written and interesting book. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for something besides cookbooks to read.
What follows is the recipe from Milk Street Tuesday Nights Mediterranean and Judy’s review.
The recipe was just okay. In truth, not spicy and needed more heat spice. Easy to make, easy to burn, too! This is the second recipe I prepared, and neither is outstanding. I would not recommend purchasing the book, though it did suggest some interesting spice combinations. Finally had the opportunity use that sumac!
I am the author of a recent book on Amish women (In Plain View: The Daily Lives of Amish Women), a 10 year endeavor to become more familiar with Amish culture, food and fellowship. I teach public health programming at Arcadia University in Pennsylvania and work as a non-profit consultant to scratch-made meals cooked in ones home and then delivered to those who are infirm. I am an enthusiastic cook of ethnic cuisines and eager to learn more about other cultures through their foods.
Thank you, Judy, for taking the time out of your busy life to join our band of cookbook reviewers. If you are interested in finding out more information about Judy’s book, In Plain View, please visit https://heraldpress.com/author/judy-stavisky.

Hi Bernadette, great to meet Judy and read her opinion of this book and this recipe which I also made.
Hi, Judy and Bernadette – Thank you for this candid review. I love that three different book club members used this same recipe, each with slightly different thoughts and opinions. In this way, recipes and cookbooks are quite similar to books and movies — each of us has a somewhat different takeaway. I greatly appreciate these diverse opinions–it makes for great discussion!
I agree 100 percent. Diversity like spice livens everything up.
“She first introduced herself to me by saying she knew she wasn’t the only person in the world who read cookbooks for bedtime stories. I laughed out loud because that is the truth about me.” And true for me too!!!!!!
Ahhh, welcome to the group kindred spirit.
Good to meet Judy and to read her review.
I appreciate this honest review!
I’ve never cooked with sumac, must be interesting though.
It gives a slightly lemon taste to recipes. You would like it.
