EGGNOG – the perfect Christmas Libation

Eggnog has always been a personal favorite. I think it might be because of having it as a child. Egggnog along with rock candy was a must during the holiday season when I was a child because of my grandmother from Scotland. My grandmother definitely believed in the medicinal value of spirits because “that was how we did it in the old country”.

My friend Gerry makes the most absolutely delicious eggnog and agreed to share the recipe with us. Here is his story and recipe.

Some thirty Christmases ago was reminiscing with my mother-in-law Peggy Collins about the glory of Christmases past.

 I shared a story of how on Christmas Eve I would be so excited I was bouncing off the walls. My parents started the tradition of allowing me to drink a glass of homemade Eggnog and a shot of my grandfather’s Schnapps (this was before ADHD medicine).  The healthy glasses of Eggnog and Schnapps would calm me down and allow me drift off to sleep so Santa could visit. 

My mother-in-law Peggy found a family recipe that came from her family in Scotland; and starting in 1987 my “Knock-You-On-Your-Arse” Eggnog was born. My friends, family and neighbors look forward to each year’s batch.  

The recipe below can be adjusted depending on those imbibing (and driving) to taste …and alcohol content as well; No counting calories or worrying about cholesterol. If made strong enough I can guarantee you won’t remember.

6 Large Eggs

3 Cups Whole Milk

2 Qt Heavy Cream

2 Cups Sugar

1 Pint of Rum, Bourbon, Brandy (can add more or less as desired; or can use just Bourbon and Brandy)

Separate the Eggs. In bowel with yolks add Milk, Cream, Sugar and Booze small portions at a time (no need to measure; mainly so sugar doesn’t clump) while stirring until all ingredients have been added. 

I like to refrigerate overnight (just like soup it’s even better next day).

Serve in 4oz glass can sprinkle nutmeg and or cinnamon as preferred.

*I don’t but can whip egg whites and fold into Eggnog*

    • I always made a seperate pitcher from them. I just got a note from one of my friend’s daughters telling me she first had egg nog at my house and remembers it to this day! Wishing you all the blessings of the holiday, Rachel.

  1. many years ago we stayed with a friend in Philly and i discovered an eggnog recipe in a magazine by Rev. Tallulah. I’ve been making it ever since. Eggnog wasn’t really known in australia back then!

  2. This story was heartwarming and hilarious. I just purchased a “premium” bottle of eggnog that was kind of pricey (and that was without the booze!) I am pretty sure this homemade recipe is much better- it looks delicious. I will definitely be saving this one for the future. Thanks for sharing!
